The Armor of God

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NLT) (Emphasis is mine)

I love this image above for the whole armor of God because not only does it tell you what the armor is, but also how we can use it. This is open for all of us to read in the Bible and apply to our lives in our own ways. We are Warrior Princesses after all.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

Let’s take a deeper look at these pieces of armor we are supposed to don at first light and wear until we lay our heads on our pillows at night and God watches over us.

THE BELT OF TRUTH: What is the truth and where can we find it? Everything God says is the truth. In his holiness He cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18). Since the Word of God, aka the Bible, came from God, it holds nothing but truth as well. We can use the bible to equip ourselves with truth that we can then use as a weapon against the enemy, the father of lies (John 8:44) Meditate on the Word, memorize verses that speak to you. Stick up notes on your walls, your mirrors, in your closet, on your computer screen of those verses. When you are confronted with a lie from the enemy you can use that verse to combat it. An example of this would be when you get that terrible thought in your head that you are too bad because of the bad things you’ve done in the past (This is one I face frequently). Throw this in the devil’s face;

Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.”

Isaiah 1:18 (NLT)

BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS: What is the main purpose of a breastplate? It’s to protect what’s underneath from attack, of course; your heart! The devil likes to attack our very being and our heart. He will promise you your heart’s desire if you follow the ways of the world, but this is a lie. Chasing money won’t make you happy, following sin won’t make you happy, sex outside of marriage won’t make you happy, being the most popular won’t make you happy. I am a living testimony of this! God’s promises, His will for us, His purpose for our lives, His commandments, they’re all written on our hearts. The devil wants to get in there and erase these things from existence. Don’t let him!

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

FOR SHOES, PUT ON THE PEACE THAT COMES FROM THE GOOD NEWS: The good news is just that, it’s good! When you hear something really good, don’t you get this overwhelming desire to tell all your friends and loved ones? “I just got a promotion!” “I’m pregnant!” “We’re engaged!” “I’m graduating!” All good news and all things we love to shout out to the world. So, why wouldn’t we shout out about the good news of the Lord? The Bible is chocked full of good news. Jesus was the living embodiment of the good news, spreading it wherever He went in the hopes that we would do the same. I know there can be a real fear of being rejected by people if we talk too much about the Lord. We fear being labeled crazy, bible-thumpers, fanatics, and all those other terrible stereotypes out there. I have this fear. I am constantly struggling with my curse of people pleasing and my fear of rejection. It’s a huge hindrance on my ability to spread the good news. You can bet I pray to be delivered from it every single morning too. This news was meant to be shared. Share it! It could mean someone’s life.

By God’s grace and mighty power, I have been given the privilege of serving him by spreading this Good News.”

Ephesian 3:7 (NLT)

SHIELD OF FAITH: In battle, a knight would raise his shield to block an attack from the enemy, whether it be an arrow or a sword or an axe. This shield protected them from certain death. We, as Warrior Princesses, are meant to raise our faith in this same protective way to stop the attacks of the enemy. The exact phrase is “the fiery arrows of the devil”. Picture it the next time you’re under attack, if only inside your own mind. This always helps me! I’m a visual person, as most of us are in this day in age where everything is on screens. Picture whatever negative words play over and over in your mind raining down on you like arrows. Now, picture you, fully clad in shiny metal armor, raising your shield called Faith. The arrows thump as they catch in the shield, but you remained untouched. Your heart is racing, but you survived and you rejoice in that! God is faithful. If you use your faith against the enemy, you will have victory! Trust in your Lord. Trust that every single word of the Bible is truth and everything God says is true. Don’t ever lose your faith.

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 (NLT)

HELMET OF SALVATION: A helmet’s purpose is to protect our minds. This is more prevalent than ever with all there is in the world that we see and can be influenced by. A phrase that always comes to mind is ‘garbage in, garbage out’. Be aware of what you are consuming because without us knowing it, it can have a huge effect on our lives and our decisions. Not only does a helmet protect us, but it lets everyone know who it is we fight for. Your salvation is not just Christ forgiving your sins and now you’re free and clear to go about your life. It is also giving your life to Him. Your lifestyle, your words, your actions, everything you do should reflect whose side you are on in this battle.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Romans 12:2

SWORD OF THE SPIRIT: The Bible spells this one out for us. It’s the Word. The sword is the Bible itself. It’s our #1 defense against anything the world and the enemy throws at us. It cuts through the lies. God has given us all the defense we need if we just take the time to learn it, know it, memorize it, so we’re able to use it in defense at a moment’s notice. I mean, look at the sword on that Warrior Princess below! That inspires me! I want that sword, that knowledge, that massive defense weapon in my arsenal. Don’t you?
