You Are a Warrior!

The Warrior is a personality I like to call upon constantly. This is my favorite of the identities God has given us and a necessary one if we hope to survive this world without losing our faith.

There is a war going on right now. As you sit at the computer or on your phone, someone is watching you, plotting against you, scheming to steal you away into the darkness. I know this sounds like the beginning of murder mystery or suspense novel, but it’s not. It’s the truth. This is real. It’s happening here on earth and it’s happening inside of you. There is an enemy and he is here among us. We have to be ready to defend ourselves against him.

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.”

John 10:10 (NLT)

Take heart, though. With God, there is hope of victory! We don’t have to give in to the enemy. We don’t have to follow his ways anymore. There are tactics and weapons given to us to defend ourselves against him. I love this! I’m getting all pumped up just thinking about it! How strong we are against something so terrifying; we as people and we as women. The Lord gives us strength and courage to fight back! How awesome is that?

Do not be afraid as you go out to fight your enemies today! Do not lose heart or panic or tremble before them. For the Lord your God is going with you! He will fight for you against your enemies, and he will give you victory!”

Deuteronomy 20:3-4 (NLT)

How to fight off the enemy is paramount to our survival, our sanity, and our faith. There are many ways we can do this. Our God is so good in giving us instructions. There are several things that have turned me into a fearless fighter of evil and I am so happy to share them with you.

MAKING IT REAL: I was diagnosed with co-dependency, anxiety, and depression through my time in the military. Needless to say, I am no stranger to counselors and therapists. One thing I heard from every single one of them was “reject negative thoughts.” Now I’m the kind of gal that needs practical advice, not just a concept. I don’t know if you can relate to that or not, but I need real examples I can test out in my life. They suggested things like ‘when you think something bad just stop’ or ‘say no to those thoughts’. If it were that easy, wouldn’t everyone be doing it? That wasn’t enough for me. It wasn’t until I came to Christ and was informed of all the evil in the world, of our great enemy and the influences he has over us that I was able to do what they suggested. That time you felt shame over something you did in the past? That was him. That time you thought you were unlovable? Him. That time your mind told you that you were too fat, too thin, too ugly, unwanted, wrong, bad, whatever negative concept invaded your mind? It wasn’t you who placed that thought in your head. It was the enemy! And that’s not the half of it. Thoughts are where it starts but thoughts lead to actions, bad actions…sinful actions. That’s what he wants! He wants us to give up and give in to him. Steal and kill and destroy. That’s what he’s all about. It wasn’t until I personified the enemy that I was able to take my thoughts captive and reject the bad ones. Sometimes I literally picture myself sitting here, typing away and when a negative thought creeps in a can see him, his evil dark figure gripping my shoulder and whispering in my ear. That is what lights a fire under me to scream in my head (not out loud or I would scare everyone at work) “Shut up! In the name of Jesus Christ get away from me!” or something similar. Guess what, ladies. Invoke the name of Jesus for aid in fighting the devil and He will come quicker than the snap of your fingers! So many times I’ve done this and poof, the thought was gone. I go about my business and it doesn’t come back. Of course, there are the harder days when the enemy just isn’t smart enough to get it and he keeps coming back. Be persistent and don’t lose trust in God and his faithful protection. Reject it, reject it, reject it, and you WILL have victory.

GOOD OFFENSE: Pray! I can’t say it enough. Pray for protection against evil first thing in the morning and at night before you go to sleep. Pray for it for your family, for your friends, for your enemies who are deeply and heavily under his attack. God listens and comes to our aid.

Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today.”

Exodus 14:13 (NLT)

REALIZING I’M NOT ALONE: You are not the only one going through what you’re going through. Our problems are not as unique and isolating as we like to think they are. That’s the enemy trying to defeat you, to get you to give up and give in. There is strength in numbers and we need to band together as fellow Christians to create an army for fighting against evil. Don’t have any friends? (Don’t worry, we’ve all been there) The church is a great place to go to find welcoming women who are just dying to be friends with you. Do what you can to build up your girl squad and strengthen each other.

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”

Proverbs 27:17 (NLT)

Keep awake! Watch at all times. The devil is working against you. He is walking around like a hungry lion with his mouth open. He is looking for someone to eat. Stand against him and be strong in your faith. Remember, other Christians over all the world are suffering the same as you are.”

1 Peter 5:8-9 (NLT)

IT’S FLATTERING: Why is the devil so interested in you? Why is he breathing down your neck, invading your mind, working tirelessly to get you to give up your faith, give up on God, and turn to him? It’s because you’re on the right path! It’s because God is going to do great things for His kingdom through you. Maybe because you are close to opening someone else’s eyes to God. Maybe because you are about to get that breakthrough in healing you’ve been praying for and working so hard to achieve. Maybe because you are about to move up another level in your faith and grow even closer to God. Whatever it is God has planned for you, you’re on your way and the enemy hates that. He is doing all he can to derail you. Sometimes when I have a day where it feels like I’m fighting and fighting and screaming in my head for him to get away from me, I sit back and smile. That’s right, I smile (and no I’m not crazy!) But it can be comforting and encouraging to know deep in my heart that if I didn’t have God in me and all his goodness, he wouldn’t give me the time of day. His work would be done and he would leave me to destroy myself in sin. The closer you get to God, the harder, bigger, stronger, more frequent the devil’s attacks get. Steal, kill, destroy. He wants our souls and he’ll do whatever it takes to get them away from God. The good news is he’s not very clever and he uses the same methods over and over again so they become oh so easy to recognize.

WISDOM & DISCERNMENT: You ever do something or think about doing something and you get this icky feeling inside? Like your heart is being squeezed and your stomach ties up in knots? That’s God speaking to you, telling you that you’re about to do something wrong! Once you learn to discern God’s voice from the enemy’s and the world’s, you will not be tricked by the lies. The good news, no, the awesome great great greatest news is all we have to do is ask for these things. Ask God to give you the discernment to recognize His voice in you and the wisdom to follow it and it’s yours. Be persistent in this. God works in his own timing don’t forget. But He is faithful! Learn the devil’s tactics and recognize when they’re being used against you. Examples would be negative self-talk, complaining, worrying, fearfulness, persistent shame and guilt, bitterness and resentment toward others causing division, and the list goes on, but you get the picture. None of these things can be construed as good or from God. Wisdom is also gained through faithfully reading your Bible, knowing God’s truth so you can recognize the lies when you hear them.

These are just some practical examples of how you can start your battle against the enemy today. I hope you see now why it is so important that we as women put on the Warrior identity and fight for our lives. We will dive deeper into putting on the full armor of God in another article, which is super duper important for us Warrior Princesses!
